DIY Question Word Sticks

These DIY Question Word Sticks are a fun way to help kids remember what to write about. They are perfect to introduce to a class who needs direction in what details to add to their stories.

Items to Gather:

  • pom poms
  • paint sticks
  • wiggle eyes
  • hot glue and glue gun
  • question words
  • colored card stock



Step 1
: Print the question words you would like to have on your paint sticks on colored card stock.

Step 2: Laminate for durability and cut apart.
Step 3: Arrange the words on the stick and glue down. (Be sure to leave space on the top for the pom pom!)   
Step 4: Glue a pom pom to the top and add the eyes.
Step 5: Explain to your kids how to use them to help them ask good questions as they write.

Other Tips/Suggestions:

You can keep them in a central location after students have learned how to use them so they can be accessed easily. To learn more about how I used them in my classroom, click here
