DIY Word Family Sliders

Teaching students to recognize "chunks" in words is an important step in learning to read.  Introducing word families during your instruction is a great way to start.  When you make this activity, you'll have 18 word family sliders!

Items to Gather:

  • 6- 8 1/2 x 11 full sheet Avery label (Avery 48165)
  • 18 Glidden paint sample swatches (I listed the colors on the pdf in case you'd like to match colors)
  • Exacto knife

1.  Print pages 1-6 of the pdf file on the full sheet label and pages 7-10 on cardstock.

2.  Cut the cards from the label. Peel the backing and adhere it to the matching color swatch.

3.  With an Exacto knife, cut the horizontal slits on the card.

4.  Weave the corresponding letter strips through the slits.

Other Tips/Suggestions:

I have to admit I'm a little crazy about color coordination.  I've color coordinated the letter strips to match the border color of the card and the Glidden paint swatch.  In this case, it's helpful as your students can quickly find the correct letter strip for the card.

Hope you enjoy this activity!
